What is Testing and Tagging?
Testing and tagging, more commonly known as PAT Testing or Portable Appliance Testing of electrical equipment.
It is the procedure of checking 240-volt single-phase electrical appliances. These appliances or devices are plugged into standard three-pin wall socks in your home or workplace. This process is the best way to identify if the appliances are electrically safe.
Some Larger Homes or their Garages may have 3 Phase power.

How to know if Testing & Tagging is the best way!
Electrical equipment testing and tagging aim to determine if the appliance is electrically safe for personal use. Each device undergoes a visual inspection for defects such as damage or missing components and several electrical tests to measure earth continuity, insulation resistance and polarity. Testing all your equipment with a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT) is highly recommended for construction sites, schools, offices, and retail workplaces. Test and Tag inspections are performed on your electrical equipment to comply with the AS/NZS 3760:2022.

Test & Tag Frequency
The most common environments to be inspected are as follows, including their Test and Tag Frequency.
- New appliances – before initial use
- 3 months – building, construction & demolition
- 6 months – factories, warehouses, commercial cleaning & production
- 12 months – Commercial workplaces, offices & most other applications
- 24 months – Residential type areas: Hotels, Motels, hostels, boarding houses, halls
- 5 yearly – any environment where the equipment or supply cord is not prone to flexing or open to abuse.
- Hire equipment needs to be inspected before being hired, plus it is to be tested and tagged every three months.
Regular inspections of your electrical equipment at your workplace and home should be part of your Hazard assessment!
What Equipment needs to be Tested and Tagged?
The following range of appliances should get professionally tested using a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT) in NZ.
Office equipment includes (printers, copiers, computers, monitors, heaters, microwaves, computers and other general office equipment).
Power tools, electrical appliances, electric blankets, extension leads, RCDs, IEC Leads, Multi-boxes, Portable equipment, hand-held equipment and stationary machinery. Most lunch rooms also have Microwaves that can start to leak dangerous Radiation, becoming a health hazard.
We use a Microwave Leakage tester to record these radiation levels.
RCD - Residual Current Device
An RCD (Residual Current Device) is best known as a life-saving electrical safety device that can either be a fixed type located in your switchboard or PowerPoint or a portable unit for use in various locations.
An RCD will detect any disruption to the electrical flow through the circuit. They will quickly switch the power off should a disturbance typically associated with electric shock or electrocution be detected.
Portable RCDs are made in many shapes, sizes and configurations.
Regular testing will ensure your RCDs remain in a safe working condition.
